About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Forced to turn to writing as a means of supporting herself in her widowhood, "Libbie" Custer (1842-1933) wrote three books describing her military life and adventures with George Armstrong Custer on the western plains. Following the Guidon chronicles the period in the Indian campaigns from 1867 to 1869, which culminates in the Battle of the Washita in what is now Oklahoma. 341 p. with 16 illustrations. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt, black, silver, red, and blue stamping. Period previous owner's ink signature to the title page and front flyleaf. Bookplate of writer and poet Vernon "Pat" Patterson (1896-1978) to the front pastedown, with a small bookseller's label to the rear pastedown. The spine is lightly faded, with a bit of wear to the corners and tips; otherwise very good.
