About This Item

Atheneium Publishers, 1960. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 240 pages. First American edition of English translation from Silone's post-war revised version of his famous anti-fascist novel (first published 1933 when he was in exile in Switzerland, issued in English by Penguin Books 1934; revised 1949). Foreword by Malcolm Cowley, Note on the Revision of Fontamara written by Silone 1959. Small 8vo (5-1/4" x 8-1/4"), beige cloth with red/white/green lettering on spine, title blind-stamped from back board around to front, tan stain to front board from contact with another book, black topstain and end papers, scant shelf wear, vertical tan stains on p. 200-01 from laid-in newspaper clipping (Christian Science Monitor review of Silone's play The Story of a Humble Christian) which conveys with the book and on p. 70-1 evidently from a bookmark; book also falls open to that page. Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff and date 1960 written on second fly-leaf, his marginalia observed on five pages primarily relate to word-choices by the translator.

About Berthoff Books

Berthoff Books sells books previously owned by the late Warner B. Berthoff, Professor of English and American Literature, emeritus, at Harvard University, and members of his family. Some books contain marginalia by Warner Berthoff, the late Prof. Ann E. Berthoff (U. Mass-Boston, English composition and rhetoric), or others, which we aim to describe accurately. Our inventory features English and American fiction and poetry, 20th-century literary criticism, world literature, history, and philosophy. Other categories are history and politics of Australia, Asia, South Africa and the Middle East; intelligence agencies and gnostic beliefs; Russian literature and criticism; and Russian and Soviet history.
