New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1934. Ignazio Silone (pseudonym for Secondino Tranquilli, 1900-1978) was nominated for the Nobel Prize ten times; he was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 1969. A founder of the Italian Communist Party, he was later expelled due to his opposition to Stalin. During World War II he was a Resistance leader and agent for the OSS. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition of his first novel, a scarce title. The translation is by Michael Wharf. Black cloth binding, with a gilt representation of the Italian village on the front; gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 299 pages; red topstain. Previous-owner signature (1934) on the FFEP; the rear EP has a penciled notation. The dustjacket, not often seen, is Very Good (Minus). Complete and unclipped, it has one large chip and several small ones along the edges. The jacket has darkened, but remains striking nonetheless.The front flap features an advert for "I, Claudius" by Robert Graves. In an archival plastic protector.. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good (Minus). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
