About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892. Three year prior to his death the Scottish author wrote this critical account of the Samoan Civil War (1886-1894), castigating the colonial powers who involved themselves. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, issued at the same time as the English version, but less common. Decorative olive cloth binding; decorations in black, with titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 322 pages; with a twelve-page catalog of "Selected Essays" in the rear. A solid and Near Fine copy, with hints only of rub to the margins; ghost of a stain on front cover. A small closed tear to the FFEP has been repaired with archival tape.. In an archival plastic protector.. First American Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

An affair which might be deemed worthy of a note of a few lines in any general history has been here expanded to the size of a volume or large pamphlet. The smallness of the scale, and the singularity of the manners and events and many of the characters, considered, it is hoped that, in spite of its outlandish subject, the sketch may find readers. It has been a task of difficulty. Speed was essential, or it might come too late to be of any service to a distracted country.
