About This Item

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1927. Very Good in a Very Good dustjacket. Orange boards. Both the spine and the decorative front board are stamped in black. 338pps., with a number of line drawings by Robert Amick. Stated First Editon, however these Grosset & Dunlap issues are re-prints using the same printing plates as the Harper original. There is mild bumping to the tips and spine-ends and a light soil-mark on the front board. Also, there is a faint bit of foxing to the page-edges. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is in splendid condition; no reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has modest edgewear and a 1 1/2" closed tear at the bottom of the front panel. All in all, a very nice and colorfully jacketed copy of this early issue. ".A story of the old West -- of the lawless days of cattle-stealing and the thrilling pursuit and capture of wild horses -- is full of the intensity and dash which made up life then and which Zane Grey alone can bring to life in print. Unjustly driven away from the home ranch and from his sweetheart by his father's displeasure, Ben Ide seeks refuge in the remote fastnesses of Forlorn River. There, with two companions, he follows the trail of a troop of wild horses led by the beautiful wild stallion, California Red. Suspected of cattle-thieving by the ranchers, Ben finally succeeds in running the real thieves to earth -- but the fight which follows terminates in an exciting and arousing surprise." Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile. Satisfaction guaranteed or all costs you've incurred will be promptly refunded. Reviews

On Apr 10 2020, a reader said:
For my money "Forlorn River" is the better of the two books that comprise the story about Jim Lacey, the other being its sequel, "Nevada". "Nevada" is the more well known and the critic's choice, perhaps because Nevada was on the list of the first paper backs ever to be printed by Bantam books, and stayed on their list perpetually. But the story of Ben Ide, a young man who is at odds with his father over whether Ben was going to amount to anything because Ben loved to chase wild horses, and Ina Blaine, the second daughter of Hart Blaine, who thinks his daughter's four years at college has given her some strange ideas, and who will not be forced to marry Sewell McAdam, the son of a business partner of her father, makes for a rare good time in reading. When Ben is accused of cattle rustling he is forced to abandon his ranch, so he sets out to find who the real thieves are, but becomes side tracked because he is given the opportunity to catch "California Red" the fastest, most magnificent piece of horseflesh known in four states. Nevada, as Jim Lacy is known, had arrived at Ben's ranch and without any questions or seeming curiosity Ben takes care of his physical needs and let's Nevada stay on, again without knowing in the least who he is. Very quickly they become fast friends, and Nevada the go-between for Ben and Ina because their fathers do not get along due to some deal in which Ina's father took advantage. This story ends with Ben marrying Ina, and Ben's sister Hettie pining away for Nevada who leaves. But that is NOT the end of the story; you have to read the sequel, "Nevada" to get that. This is an excellent book I highly recommend you read.

Payment Methods Accepted:
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover Card, and checks or money orders made out to Jeffrey C. Wright. You can also, if you like, make your payment -- credit card or bank transfer -- through Paypal.com (Acct name: nooksofbooks@comcast.net).

Grading:
Dealers who are otherwise members of prestigious bookselling organizations should know that you can\'t grade a book Fine if it\'s remaindered; nor can a dustjacket be graded Fine that is price-clipped. And yet we see this sort of thing -- more and more -- and from all manner of establishments. It reflects poorly on the industry.
Thus, we recommend that any prospective online customer insist on a thorough description (such as are issued through these Nooks) for any collectible item. We\'re well-versed, here, in the grading process and we do so fairly if not conservatively.

Refunds:
We understand all too well the hesitancy of some collectors to make their purchases online, particularly in such cases where books are scarce or costly. We, therefore, stress the integrity in these Nooks. Your satisfaction is guaranteed, or all costs you\'ve incurred will be refunded -- no questions asked -- providing the book is returned to us in the same condition within two weeks.

Shipping:
Though most booksellers are quite professional and know how to properly handle their wares, I\'ve noticed (being a book-buyer, too) that many online shops can be slipshod and amateurish in their shipping practices. This being so, we\'d like to assure you: when you buy from us the item will be nicely and securely presented. It will be gift-wrapped, sealed in a plastic bag to protect it against water damage, encased in bubble wrap and/or foam \'peanuts\' and boxed. We ship books out the way we like to receive them. Except, perhaps, in the rare occasion of an inexpensive reading copy, I\'d not think of consigning a book from these Nooks to the hard knocks of the postal system in a simple bubble-mailer. You won\'t get that shoddy handling here.

Insurance:
It is our policy to pay the insurance for any purchase over $200.00. Should you like to provide your own insurance for less of a sum, the cost is $1.30 for $50.00 of coverage, $2.20 for $100.00, and $3.20 for up to $200.00 of coverage. Insurance, in such cases, is suggested (simply state your preference in the comments segment during checkout) as we cannot be responsible for books that are lost in transit.
