About This Item

New York & Philadelphia: D. Appleton and Company & George S. Appleton, 1843. The Scottish/Irish author William Hamilton Maxwell (1792-1850) was an early practicioner of "rollicking military fiction" such as that written by Charles Lever (cf. his "Military Novels"); he also wrote a biography of Wellington and a history of the 1798 Irish Rebellion. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition, issued one year after the English version. Uncommon to scarce. Tan ribbed cloth binding, decorated with floral blindstamping; gilt lettering on the spine, with a gilt figure of what Quercus supposes is either Hector or Mark Antony. Clean text; 412 pages, with 32 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. One page is devoted to an Appleton announcement for their import service from London, Europe, and Germany, as well as "Old Books." Mild bumping, a little bit of fray at head and foot of spine; spine has split at the gutter but is holding nicely. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
