About This Item

Indianapolis & New York: Bobbs-Merrill, 1943. Ayn Rand (Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum, 1905-1982) has in recent years come back into fashion as a darling of the political right, although she wears her crown a bit inconsistently. After initial failure with two earlier novels, she achieved success with "The Fountainhead," which established her philosophy of Objectivism. Some critics refer to it by other names ("selfishness" is one) and have savaged her writing. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition; meets all the points as a First, lacking only the CP designation. First State red cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 754 pages. A few pages have some creasing, and the fore-edge has some waviness - perhaps the book was stored for a time in a damp environment. The dustjacket is in the Second State. It has been clipped, and has some edgewear; a bit of fade to the spine. In an archival plastic protector. Withal, a very solid copy of this desirable book that only just misses a Near Fine designation. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Later Printing.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus.

Synopsis

When The Fountainhead was first published, Ayn Rand 's daringly original literary vision and her groundbreaking philosophy, Objectivism, won immediate worldwide interest and acclaim. This instant classic is the story of an intransigent young architect, his violent battle against conventional standards, and his explosive love affair with a beautiful woman who struggles to defeat him. This edition contains a special Afterword by Rand's literary executor, Leonard Peikoff which includes excerpts from Ayn Rand's own notes on the making of The Fountainhead . As fresh today as it was then, here is a novel about a hero—and about those who try to destroy him.
