About This Item

1960. 4to., 2 blank leaves, 53 pp., [1], [2], 2 blank leaves. Quarter parchment stamped in gilt over green marbled paper boards, t.e.g., edges untrimmed, with green marbled paper covered slipcase; slipcase housed in custom red cloth clamshell case with gilt red leather spine label. Volume and slipcase in very fine condition. The custom clamshell case having protected this copy and slip case; does however have light sunning, slight rubbing to spine label, otherwise it too is fine. Printed in Dante type by Giovanni Mardersteig on the hand-press of the Officina Bodoni in Verona. Paper made by Fratelli Magnani, Pescia. Mardersteig set this edition from the July 1952 ninth Faber and Faber trade edition, which contained an error, and is therefore repeated in this edition: the final 5 lines of Section IV of "Burnt Norton" appear as the first lines of Section V. "An Erratum slip, measuring 8.3 x 12.1 cm., was prepared but not used, in deference to the printer's wishes." Gallup,/ A43 c.

Synopsis

The last major verse written by Nobel laureate T. S. Eliot, considered by Eliot himself to be his finest work   Four Quartets is a rich composition that expands the spiritual vision introduced in “The Waste Land.” Here, in four linked poems (“Burnt Norton,” “East Coker,” “The Dry Salvages,” and “Little Gidding”), spiritual, philosophical, and personal themes emerge through symbolic allusions and literary and religious references from both Eastern and Western thought. It is the culminating achievement by a man considered the greatest poet of the twentieth century and one of the seminal figures in the evolution of modernism.
