About This Item

NP, ND. Five pages hand-written manuscript, each leaf measuring 9" x 7", of a discourse given before the Society of the History of the Revolution. This is a cut-and-paste effort by France, with emendations, cross-outs, etc., showing how carefully he worked and reworked his speech. Each leaf mounted on tabs and bound in 3/4 red morocco by Stroubants, binding worn but manuscript fine. Inserted is a hand-written notation that this manuscript is from the Library of Mrs. Rita Lydis of Washington Square Village, sold at Anderson Galleries in 1920. France, a Nobel Laureate (1921), used his scholarship and knowledge of the French Revolution to create one of the best novels about the Revolution, LES DIEUX ONT SOIFS, published in 1912.
