History of the Memphis, El Paso and Pacific Railroad that furthered the development of northwest Texas despite its unsavory history and brought 100s of French immigrants into the area. General John Charles Fremont sold the railroad bonds in France for $5,340,000. It's French holders renamed it The Franco-Texan Land Co. The Road was finally built by the Texas and Pacific.
