About This Item
1695 1ed FAMED Robert Boyle Against Swearing Cursing Oaths Philosophy Anger RARE
While mostly known for his contributions to natural philosophy and science, Robert Boyle was highly interested in theology, devoting much of his time to studying the existence of God, using his philosophical and even scientific discoveries as evidence. One of his many important treatises was his "Against Swearing and Cursing" – a discussion on the sins of cursing, dealing with anger, agreeing to and breaking oaths, and admissions of guilt.
The 'Printing and the Mind of Man' calls Boyle
"the best-known English scientist of his day, and the greatest experimental scientist of the mid-17th-century." (PMM 141).
