A definitive account by John Dunmore of French exploration of the Pacific, never before completely told, from about 1700 to 1800. Partly based on extensive research in archives. Includes Bougainville, De Surville, Marion de Fresne, Kerguelen, La Perouse (and the search for him), and Marchand. (Volume 1 of a 2-volume set. Has 13 maps and 2 plates. This copy has a facsimile jacket of different design than the standard jacket. This is the first printing, Clarendon Press, 1965: No ISBN in book.).
