About This Item

London: J. M. Dent & Co., 1906. First Edition Thus Second Printing. Leather. Very Good Minus. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Full burgundy leather edition published by Dent in 1906. The Everyman's Library was conceived and brought to life by J. M. Dent (1849-1926), bookbinder and publisher, and Ernest Rhys (1859-1946), poet and editor, who both had the vision of a large collection of the great books of the world, in a handsome edition that would be affordable by the common man. Number 31 in the series, 'The French Revolution' was one of the first 50 titles to be published in February 1906. Demand was so great that it had to be reprinted in July of that year, and this copy comes from that second printing. This is the deluxe publisher's binding of full burgundy leather with elaborate gilt decoration to upper board and spine, and top edges gilt. It originally sold for 2/-, twice the price of the more common cloth edition. This is a very good copy. The binding is clean with light wear and the gilt is bright. There is light wear and fraying to both spine tips. The text block is secure. The silken bookmarker is still attached and is clean and bright except for the ends where it's been exposed to light and dust. There is age-toning to the page edges and endpapers but the contents are very clean, without inscriptions, foxing or other markings. A very attractive copy. xxiii, 351 pp. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
