Besides the 159 books Ellis published under his own name, he also wrote under these pseudonums: James Fenimore Cooper Adams, Captain Bruin Adams, Boynton M. Bethune, Captain Latham C. Carleton, Frank Faulkner, Captain R. M. Hawthorne, Lieut. Ned Hunter, Lieut. R. H. Jayne, Charles E. Lasalle, H. R. Millbank, Billex Muller, Lieut. J. H. Randolph, Emerson Rodman, E.A. St. Mox, and Seelin Robins. "The Frontier Angel" begins thus: "In the western part of Pennsylvania, near the commencement of the Ohio river, stands a small town, which, at the close of the last century, numbered about thirty dwellings. The inhabitants were mostly farmers, possessed of large and beautiful farms, who commenced their labors in the morning, and retired to rest in the evening, without much fear of the molestation of their savage brethren."
