About This Item
Waverly, NY: Mei Foo, 1940. First Edition. Limited to 5000 copies. Octavo (21cm); yellow paper wrappers w/ red print lettering, green print pattern of Chinese characters reading "Mei Fu"; 104pp. Light offsetting and soil to wrappers, minor handling wear; Very Good or better.
W.J. Sosnoski taught himself how to read Chinese while stationed in Shanghai some twenty years prior to the publication of this book. Here, he gives us an equally informal but thorough introduction to reading, writing, and understanding Chinese characters. Features vocabulary lists with ideographic breakdowns, plus plenty of puzzles to test one's skills. Sosnoski's style is casual, entertaining, and surprisingly effective. However, this being 1940 (and the height of World War II), one can expect some outdated rhetoric and slang. Not listed in OCLC under this title/author as of November 2019.
