SIGNED by Rothe, with a numbered SIGNED mezzotint titled "Preview" 167/500 in rear pocket. 4to. 271pp. Index of Titles. 171 mezzotints; illustrations (most in color). Black & white photo-reproduction of the artist by Richard Schwartz. Biography by John Gruen. Essay on the history of the mezzotint by Cam Newell. Burgundy leather with gilt stamping; brown silk ribbon marker. Minor shelf wear & 4 small marks to lower front cover else a fine copy. G.H. Rothe (1935-2007) was renowned as master of the mezzotint and as one of the world's greatest artists. She combined technical mastery with inspired imagination. She was born in Beuthen, Germany; her studies in art history, human anatomy, goldsmithing and extensive drawing culminated in her discovery of the mezzotint technique. Impelled to revive this most difficult technique of printmaking led to an invention in 1972 never accomplished before in mezzotint: transparency. "This Catalogue Raisonne of G.H. Rothe's mezzotints has been divided into the following categories: Dance, Horses, Still Life, Landscapes, Figurative. The images within each section have been listed in chronological order, according to published dates.
