About This Item

Hartford, CT: American Publishing Co., 1876. Tall 8vo. 466, [2] pp. Frontisp., 32 plates. Lavender-coloured cloth, black & gilt embossing, decoration & lettering on front cover & spine (minor chipping head & foot of spine, spotting to spine, wear to corners, minor bumping to corners, front inner hinge starting), still a G copy. First edition of Harte’s one serious attempt to write a full-length novel. The sensations begin with the straits of a party of settlers driven to cannibalism by famine, and culminate in an earthquake. Humorous scenes are interlaced with the murders lynching, miraculous escapes; and a perplexing tangle of villainy, love and jealousy, intrigue and counter-intrigue, is unravelled in an astonishing trial scene. See: Baker, Guide to the Best Fiction in English (1912), p. 417.
