Gabriel Slaughter was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, and settled in Mercer County, Kentucky about 1791. He had a distinguished career as a military man, leading a regiment at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. He became Kentucky's seventh governor in 1816 upon the death of the sitting governor, and had a rather difficult administration. He then served a term in the Kentucky House of Representatives and retired from politics, living out his life as a Baptist lay minister..
