Although English by birth and of English and Ulster Protestant descent he became a stalwart of Ireland's Gaelic League, an Irish nationalist and an important and influential member of Fianna Fáil and a supporter of De Valera. ... ... ... The book has two aims, according to the author: firstly, to provide a description of Gaelic literature and secondly to provide, as he puts it, "a sort of chart to the literature surveyed" so that the reader might distinguish between the different schools and movements of Irish letters. While most of the relevance is to Irish history and literature, and to Irish Gaelic there's also a chapter on Scots and on Manx Gaelics.
