About This Item

Paris: Martinet. FINE plates. 855 images, 17.5 high by 12 wide(cm). Colas 1159.. [1844-70]. Hardcover. FINE plates. Bound in 10 worn half morocco volumes holding 855 lithographs, each meticulously hand colored with vibrant colors. . The set was printed a few at a time, spread out between 1844 and 1870, but consecutively numbered 1 to 1000. Published by Martinet of Paris. Our set's highest number is 968. Scarce at this level of completeness. An exact list of the plates numbers in our 10 vols is available. Our set has no title page or any prelims. With bookplate of a London maker of horse drawn carriages & coachs who died in 1898. Plates are of actual French actors & actresses of the period. 11 plates are double page, of which 10 are stub mounted. These 11 are scenes from plays. All others are of individual actors & actresses. Actor's names, their charactor's name and the play's name are listed on each plate. About 5% printed on slightly poorer quality paper. Some with margins alone lightly foxed or toned. Less than about 25 with light to moderate foxing in the image. BUT ZERO soiling, marginalia, damp staining, etc. All with meticulous hand coloring and gum arabic high lighting. Preceded by the "Petite Galerie Dramatique" series, 1790 - 1844, of 1500 hand colored engravings. Succeeded by the "Neuvelle Dramatique" series. .
