About This Item
Iowa City: State Historical Society of Iowa Book. Fair. Hardcover. (ca 1950). Limited Edition, xiv, [33]pp, index, folding map. Both covers are dampstained, leaving the boards warped, but the interior is VG with no staining to the pages or the map. The dj is still G, though chipped and lightly dampstained. Limited to 3500cc, printed by the Prairie Press. First published in 1840. Isaac Galland was a true pioneer, eminently qualified to write of early Iowa. He was born in 1792 near present day Chillicothe, Ohio. After a series of youthful adventures, including searching for gold in Mexico and being imprisoned there, and allegedly carrying on a counterfeiting operation in Edgar County, Illinois, he arrived in what is now Lee County, Iowa in 1829. During the next thirty years, until his death at Fort Madison in 1858, he continued his adventurous lifestyle, participating in the fur trade, speculating in land, acting for a time as the personal secretary to Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet, executing several notable publishing ventures, prescribing medicine occasionally for ailing neighbors, and starting the first school in Iowa.
