About This Item

Philadelphia: J.M. Stoddart and Co., 1874 Reprint. "Richly illustrated with Nearly One Hundred and Fifty Steel Engravings, Executed in the Finest Style of the Art, Mostly from Original Designs by Distinguished Artists." Hard cover quarto (measuring 8 ¾ x 11 inches) in full leather with a design of round, embossed borders of filigree and banding in black, highlighted with owners' name on center front in gilt: " Rosa B. Closson.," 488 pp. Gilt is used to highlight the raised cords of the six compartments on the spine, which also has additional embossed design in black. The turn-ins are also rolled in a gilt filigree pattern, which shows off nicely upon the colorful marbled endpapers. All edges gilt, and all board edges rolled with gilt. Chromolithographed title page in color. Includes poetry by the likes of Longfellow, Bryant, Poe, Whittier, Harte and Cooper. The editor, Henry Coppee (1821-1895,)attended Yale, was a graduate of West Point, and fought in the Mexican-American War. His published works include those on military themes as well as literature. Condition: at least Very Good. A couple of small scuffs to rear board. Small amount of wear to hinges and corners. Pages are age-toned, with the occasional spot, but generally very clean. The gilt is bright and beautiful, especially upon the decorated turn-ins to the delicious marbled paper. One small closed tear to the latter upon the fore-edge is not immediately apparent, given the busy design. The only writing is an inscription of the date in old ink on the ffep: "December 7th, 1858." (See BAL VII, p. 142 for first edition info. in 1859.). Hard Cover. Very Good.
