London, Macmillan and Co., 1887.. SECOND but FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION, 8vo, 190 x 130 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, red cloth, gilt lettered on upper cover and spine, pages x, 96, (3), black endpapers. Laid in is the printed envelope containing the card-diagram and 9 pink and grey card counters as required. Envelope and card are both dated 1886. A game intended to help children understand formal logic with diagrams, numerous examples and tests. Head and tail just very slightly worn, spine darkened, gilt on spine slightly dull. A little extremely faint foxing to margin of frontispiece and title page (offset from tissue guard). Contents very bright and clean. Envelope faintly foxed and partly split on flap fold. A very good clean tight copy. Originally printed by Baxter of Oxford with the date 1886 but this edition was withdrawn from sale by Carroll as unsatisfactory and the bulk of it sent to America. This 1887 edition was printed by Richard Clay and Sons and is termed the "first published edition". There are copies with envelope and card dated 1887 but many turn up dated 1886.
