First printing of Van Allsburg's first book, with two tipped-in bookplates inscribed by him - the story of a boy's search for his dog in a mysterious and eerie garden. Chris Van Allsburg's rich illustrations are easy to get lost in. He began his career as a sculptor, graduating with an MFA from RISD; his wife Lisa and illustrator David Macaulay urged him to try his hand at children's book illustration in 1979, and a Caldecott Honor, National Book Award, and numerous other accolades later, his books are a beloved part of many childhood (and adult) shelves. THE GARDEN OF ABDUL GASAZI earned him his first award, a Caldecott Honor. 9.5'' x 11.5''. Original cream cloth, blind-stamped central vignette, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($8.95) color pictorial dust jacket. Navy endpapers. Illustrated by Van Allsburg with full-page black-and-white plates. [32] pages. Two bookplates inscribed by Van Allsburg tipped onto front flyleaf and rear pastedown. Jacket with mild soil, a bit of bumping to spine ends; light sunning to spine. Binding spine and corners a touch darkened. Interior clean and fresh.
Synopsis
Sometimes that very thin line between illusion and reality is not as clearly defined as we would like it to be. It certainly wasn't the day that Alan Mitz stumbled into the garden of Abdul Gasazi.
