About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1979. Fine in near fine jacket.. Signed later printing of Van Allsburg's first book, the story of a boy's search for his dog in a mysterious and eerie garden. Chris Van Allsburg's rich illustrations are easy to get lost in. He began his career as a sculptor, graduating with an MFA from RISD; his wife Lisa and illustrator David Macaulay urged him to try his hand at children's book illustration in 1979, and a Caldecott Honor, National Book Award, and numerous other accolades later, his books are a beloved part of many childhood (and adult) shelves. 9.5'' x 11.5''. Original cream cloth, blind-stamped central vignette. In original unclipped ($17.95) pictorial dust jacket with silver Caldecott Honor Book seal to front panel. Black endpapers. Illustrated by Van Allsburg with full-page black-and-white plates. [32] pages. Signed by Van Allsburg on title page. 2'' closed tear to jacket front joint, light sunning around spine. Minor edgewear.

Synopsis

Sometimes that very thin line between illusion and reality is not as clearly defined as we would like it to be. It certainly wasn't the day that Alan Mitz stumbled into the garden of Abdul Gasazi. For in this bizarre and eerie place -- where strange topiary trees loomed -- the evil visage of Gasazi casts its shadow. And even after Alan escaped, the spell of Gasazi still seemed to penetrate into his everyday world. In this extraordinary, unusual, and unique picture book, Chris Van Allsburg explores both the real and surreal worlds with incredible deftness. In doing so, he has created exquisite and beautiful images that will continue to haunt readers long after they have left the enchanted garden of Abdul Gasazi.
