About This Item

New York: Crown Publishers, 1970. Cloth. Very good/good +. 258p. 2nd printing. Jacket has a few chips to edges and a few holes on flap folds. Noted Hollywood columnist Graham relates the history of the infamous hotel. Built as a private residence in 1919 in the area of Los Angeles County known as West Hollywood, the hotel was created in 1926 by film actress Alla Nazimova, who bought the property from its original owner in 1919 and added 25 bungalows to develop the Garden of Allah hotel. The hotel became a refuge for noted writers from the East Coast, such as Robert Benchley, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Dorothy Parker, who came to the West Coast lured by the money offered by the motion picture studios. Actors, musicians, and other celebrities also stayed at the hotel, which led to its riotous, drunken, prank-filled existence until its demise in 1959. B&w photographs. (9-1/4"x6-1/4")
