About This Item
London, UK: Penguin, 1989. First Edition, 27th Printing . Paperback. Near Fine/None as Issued. Text/NEW w/trace margin discoloration. Soft cover/NF w/light wear & sticker removal loss to lower back corner. Collection of 15 short stories of early 20th century New Zealand from Katherine Mansfield, pseudonym of Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp (1888-1923). First published 1922 in literary magazines; this is Penguin reissue. The physical setting for the stories is loosely based upon Mansfield's childhood home in Wellington and carries autobiographical undertones. "The Garden Party", the title story, centers on an annual, ritual and elaborate garden party held by the well-to-do Sheridan family. On the same day, news arrives of the accidental horse-and-cart death of a working-class man of the poorer part of the village. Told through young Laura Sheridan's reaction to the day. She had so looked forward to the party, but when her family at large simply brushed off the tradgey by deciding the unfortunate man was drunk, leads her questioning class prejudices and absurdity of class distinctions.
