About This Item

This is a unique copy of "The Gardener and the Cook" by Lucy H. Yates that includes two handwritten letters by the author. 1913 1st edition; McBride, Nast & Company; New York. There are numerous illustrations, many of which are full-page. The book is part gardening reference, part cooking reference (though it contains no recipes) - here are examples of the contents: Ourselves and the Garden; The Distinction between Plainly Cooked and Plainly Dressed Vegetables with the Raison d'Etre of Sauces and Dressings; Of Gourds, Marrows, and their Kind; Fruit for the Table; Of Storeroom and Closet - Preservers, Jellies, Bottled Fruits, Pickles, Wines and Cordials...and more - please see the photos for the complete list. Tipped into the front of this copy are two separate letters (each double-sided) handwritten by the author.

Condition:
There are a few tiny areas on the front and back covers where the green cloth color has faded. Cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine, and at the tips of the cover corners. "Butler Hospital Library" bookplate affixed to the front pastedown with a library card sleeve affixed to the rear pastedown and partial label at the bottom of the spine...no other library markings found. The text pages are lightly age-toned and clean with no notable issues found. Foxing to the end papers and pastedowns. The rear end paper has a tanned outline of the card sleeve on the facing pastedown. Author's letter tipped onto the front end papers, and a second letter tipped-in between the front end paper and half title page. Overall the book is in Good condition.
