About This Item
New York: Peter Weed Books, [1986] Illustrated by Gorey. First edition thus [originally published 1963]. Signed by Gorey on title page. Publisher's beige paper-covered boards, front board and spine lettered in black, Gorey illustrations to front and rear boards; in its original dust jacket with matching design. About fine book, with just a touch of rubbing to spine ends and board corners; a touch of rubbing to spine ends, else fine unclipped dust jacket. Overall, an excellent example. The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a morbid and satirical alphabet book, in which 26 children - each with names that represent a letter of the alphabet - die off one by one in various ways. The book progresses in rhyming couplets, like "Q is for Quentin who sank in a mire, R is for Rhoda consumed by a fire." The book, praised by Vanity Fair as one of Gorey's "dark masterpieces of surreal morality," is arguably Gorey's most famous work.. Signed. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Gorey, Edward.
