The title poem reflects the poet's trauma resulting from his having accidentally shot and killed his brother when he was twelve years old. For 44 years Greory Orr taught at the University of Virginia where he was the founder and first Director of the MFA Program in Writing. The highly acclaimed poet has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Award in Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Rockefeller Fellowship at the Institute for the Study of Culture and Violence.
