Illustrator Rudolf Schlichter (1890-1955), der sich auch schriftstellerisch äußerte, ist mit George Grosz und Otto Dix als einer der prägenden Vertreter der "Neuen Sachlichkeit" zu nennen. Sein künstlerischer Weg verlief ebenso wenig geradlinig wie seine persönliche Entwicklung. Der von den Nationalsozialisten verfemte Künstler u. Schriftsteller hatte sich - unter dem Einfluß seiner Frau "Speedy" - bereits in den späten 1920er Jahren von politischer Radikalität, gesellschaftskritischer Provokation u. antibürgerlicher Haltung zum Katholizismus u.
