Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.

The jacket is now protected with a removable Mylar cover. The hardcover book is in good to good minus condition, free from rips, tears, bends, and writing. The book has been hand signed, inscribed and dated by the author on the title page in black ink. All black and white illustrations are present. There are a couple of minor stains on the end pages. The boards are in good condition with minimal to no wear. The binding is tight and square.

LONDON : John White, 1807 A very good copy of Rousseau's Letters translated and explained by Professor Thomas Martyn, 7th corrected and improved edition bound with Thirty-Eight plates, also by Thomas Martyn, 1794. In newer half leather binding with title label to spine and marbled boards. Page edges marbled. Letters is 503 pp plus index sections, with folding table outlining Linnaeus' system. The Thiry-Eight plates, a complete work in itself with separate title page, but prepared to link with the Letters, is 72 pp with 38 beautiful hand coloured plates by Nodder. The binding is in very good condition with a little scuffing to the spine. The contents are generally in very good condition with nice clean text pages. The plates are clean and brightly coloured. There is a small stain which affects the bottom left hand corner of plates 36-8, not affecting images.

Moisture marks to front cover. Particulars in gilt to spine, which is severely lacking the fabric. Bookplate removed from front pastedown. Odd pagination with corrections in pen to pages 161-163. Text block separated at page 258/259. ; xiii, 418 pages.

This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. This is a massive, custom three-quarter leather bound volume of 169 issues of "THE YOUTH'S COMPANION" newspaper/magazine from the 1850's. Although the label on the front cover states "1852-1855," one issue from 1850 is included. "A Family Paper, Devoted to Piety, Morality, Brotherly Love - No Sectarianism, No Controversy." The Youth's Companion was a weekly magazine/newspaper published by Nathaniel Willis in Boston from 1827 to 1929. Each issue contains 4 pages and features an engraving on the first page.
