New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1896 First edition. Octavo. xiii, [1], 155pp. Red cloth lettered in black on front cover, spine lettered in gilt. Two or three tiny spots to cover, inner front hinge nicely repaired. A fine copy. One of the author's final conclusions is, "The transportation of persons and property is as legitimate a function of the Post-office as is the transportation of letters." Chapters include, The Post Office Since 1839; Abuses of the Present System of Railway Management; Distance a False Basis for the Determination of Railway Rates; and The Cost-of-Service Principle and its Application to Public Transportation, under the Control of the Post-Office. This copy bears a presentation inscription, signed by the author and dated December 26, '96. The Presentation is to "Mr. Charles Howard Shinn" (1852-1924), author of the famous Mining Camps: A Study in American Frontier Government (1885). Shinn was also the business manager of the Overland Monthly from 1885 to 1890..

The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
