Printed for T Bewick and S Hodgson, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1807, fifth edition; 8vo, 137 x 211mm; pp x, 525, the verso of that ast page carrying an advertisement for A History of British Birds; polished light brown calf, spine panelled gilt and with a morocco label titled gilt, the inner and outer side compartmentalised with chain designs gilt, marbled end papers and edges, a very handsome early 19th century unsigned binding with very slight fading to the spine and front board and with some very light scuffing but nevertheless in very good condition; slight foxing of the text but internally generally in clean condition, firmly bound and so overall an excellent copy of the work, profusely illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Bewick. ... ... ... ... ... First published in 1790, Bewick's first work of natural history, the book became an immediate success on account of the striking wood engravings depicting clearly and in considerable detail live animals mostly in their natural surroundings. This handsome copy comes from the Bagbrooke Hall Library, according to a handwritten note on a loosely inserted cutting from the [Northampton?] Chronicle & Echo of early 1974.
