About This Item

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1820. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Thomas Bewick. A beautifully illustrated seventh edition of Thomas Bewick's influential natural history work on Quadrupeds. The seventh edition of this work. 'A General History of Quadrupeds' deals with two-hundred and sixty mammals from across the world, looking at domestic animals, such as horses and cows, as well as animals such as jackals and polecats. This work was popular upon its publication, especially for the fine illustrations. Illustrated with a vignette title page, and many in-text illustrations. Illustrated and written by Thomas Bewick. Bewick was the author of natural history works, including 'A History of British Birds', and an engraver. He was apprenticed and eventually became the partner to Ralph Beilby. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints. Minor surface cracks to the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Some light marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot. Pages v-viii are working loose. Very Good
