Small ink spot on outer fore-edge of book block; bibliographical note written in an early hand on front blank free fly leaf. Part of Elzevir’s republic series. Contains a collection of writings on Switzerland relating to history, geography, travel etc., including Josias Simmler’s "De Republica Helvetiorum libri duo" (first published 1576), a work by Daniel L’Ermite, and three other works. Three editions were published in 1627. This is the 2nd edition with fleurions on p. 4 and p. 535. [Willems 278; Berghman 1763; Rahir 242].

Title page, dedication leaf, pp 506, (ii), with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table, (slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate), a little age-toning generally, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise very clean internally, bound in full contemporary polished calf, slight wear at the corners, joints cracking slightly, lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. [The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate, but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor, in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, "Histoire Naturelle," was fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all of natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, it focuses only minerals, birds, and quadrupeds.
This fifth volume includes history of hooved animals – sheep, goats, rams, and pigs, as well as a description of dogs. While each volume of this set is illustrated, this particular tome includes over fifty full-page engravings.
