About This Item

Berkeley: University of California Press, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. Inscribed by E. Maurice Bloch on the front flyleaf in the first volume. A critical study of the stylistic development of the Missouri-born painter, with 198 plates (many color). George Caleb Bingham (1811-79) was a largely self-taught artist whose depictions of frontier life and Mississippi river scenes rank among the best and most detailed of their time. The companion volume is the most complete record of Bingham's work, with bibliographic entries on 494 paintings, 126 drawings, and 15 prints. Small quarto, two volumes, with the original prospectus laid in. Original rust cloth bindings, with brown and gilt titles. A near fine set in price-clipped dust jackets with some mild rubbing.
