About This Item

London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1959-1961 . First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. First editions of these two studies of the friendships of H. G. Wells, one regarding George Gissing, and the other Henry James. A lovely set of two biographical works about H. G. Wells and his friendships and correspondence, in the original publisher's cloth bindings and unclipped dust wrappers. Includes Henry James and H. G. Wells, A Record of their Friendship, their Debate on the Art of Fiction, and their Quarrel. Edited with an introduction by Leon Edel and Gordon N. Ray. The second impression of this work, illustrated with a monochrome plate frontispiece. With George Gissing and H. G. Wells, Their Friendship and Correspondence. Edited with an introduction by Royal A. Gettmann. Illustrated with three monochrome plates. The first impression of this work. Herbert George Wells was a popular and prolific writer, and remembered as the father of science fiction. This collection of letters and correspondence between Wells and Gissing, a fellow English novelist, and Henry James, American-British author and literary realist/modernist, reveals much about the author, including his personality and private life.  In the original publisher's cloth bindings and unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, very smart. There is some light bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. The dust wrappers are slightly creased to the extremities, and the spines are sunned. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the very occasional spot. Very Good Indeed
