Published under the auspices of The Littman library of Jewish civilization. The German Jew traces the prewar history of German Jewry, charting the progress of the Jews from Court Jew to emancipation. It stresses the role Moses Mendelssohn and his circle played in the development of this community and examines the many contributions Jews made to 19th-century German intellectual, scientific, and cultural life. Hans Israel Bach, a German-Jewish historian, psychologist, and translator, had a distinguished career in Weimar Germany, and escaped to England in 1939. He was a lifelong friend of Leo Baeck, and a distinguished lecturer on Jewish History. This volume was posthumously published. Subjects: Jews - Germany - History - 1096-1800.
