It stresses the role Moses Mendelssohn and his circle played in the development of this community and examines the many contributions Jews made to 19th-century German intellectual, scientific, and cultural life. Hans Israel Bach, a German-Jewish historian, psychologist, and translator, had a distinguished career in Weimar Germany, and escaped to England in 1939.
