About This Item

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia: Lothian Publishing, 2006. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 232 pages colour and sepia photos - All across Australia, rusty rails are gradually disappearing from view as the weeds grow and memories of the days when trains ran are fading. The railwaymen who worked, loading bales of wool into wagons or coal into the tenders of steam locomotives, have long retired. Robin Bromby, author of The Railway Age In Australia, goes in hunt of the stories and pictures of Australia's ghost railways. The book evokes memories of places like Dajarra in Queensland, now just a dusty settlement in the middle of nowhere but in the 1940s its railhead handled more cattle than even the fabled Abilene in Texas; and the Ravensthorpe line in Western Australia, where trains would stop to allow locals to pick wildflowers. The stories of these and other now vanished railways are recalled in words and photos. Also featured are the jobs of railway people that have now vanished - the signalman posted to some lonely passing loop, living in a hut or tent; the station mistress, a job for wives of railwaymen at wayside stations that saved the cost of a male stationmaster; the fireman, who toiled in heat and dirt to feed the locomotive; the manager of a refreshment kiosk who made sure passengers on long-distance trains were quickly and properly fed. The book is illustrated throughout with many photographs, most that have not been previously published. Five colour sections will feature modern photos of preserved stations, locomotives, carriages and equipment.

About Train World Pty Ltd

Train World commenced business at 615 Hawthorn road East Brighton in 1973. From a cabinet in a haberdashery store, Train World grew to take over half the shop in 1974 to take over the entire store and by 1977 it had taken over the shop and the rear residence. In 1981 the shop moved across the road to 624 Hawthorn Road East Brighton. Here too the shop grew and grew. So that by 1995 it had taken over the shop, the storage room area, the staff area, the garage, the rear warehouse and finally filling the entire building. Finally on 1st July 2012 Train world moved again to 290 Bay Street Brighton - Since the 1980s the focus of Train World has been trains and model trains, nothing but trains and everything to do with trains.
