New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1970. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. FIRST EDITION. FINE but for a very tiny bump to rear lower corner. Lovely faint tobacco aroma. Dustjacket near fine. Clipped. Edges stained by tobacco. Mylar protected. Gilt lettering, silver metallic design debossed ecru, cloth-covered spine, and front of maroon boards. Clean, bright, tight. 309 pp. Author's first book and first-prize winner in the O. Henry Collection. Hemenway reveals characters detached from themselves. "His heros are jilted husbands, orphaned boys, obsessed fathers, uncertain lovers . . . and the poignant girl of the title story," (front flap).
