The complete three volume fifth edition of this enormously informative glossary of architectural terms, with two volumes of plates and one of text. The enlarged and expanded fifth edition of this work, first published during the Gothic revival and associated with the movement's spread. Illustrated with a frontispiece to volume I, one-hundred and thirty-six plates to volume II, and one-hundred and twenty-eight plates to volume III. Collated, complete.In this edition, more attention has been given to the subject of mediaeval carpentry than was present in previous editions, with an increase in the number of illustrations of timber roofs, and with additional accounts of carpenter's terms.With the illustrated bookplate of the architectural association to front pastedowns, with the inscription 'Lectures in the History of Architecture First Prize J. Murray'. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture". In half morocco bindings, with cloth covered boards. Fading to back strips, with light rubbing to board perimeters and back strip heads and tails. Boards bright. Front joint of volume I starting, with board weakly held by cords only. Head and tail of volume I rear joint, and volumes II and III front joints starting, with boards holding firm. Bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Good
