New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927 Hard cover, 8vo., pp xvii [1] 271. In publisher's black cloth binding with gold lettering and decoration blocked to spine. Black and gold decorative endpapers and matching historiated capitals adorn the text. CONDITION: Near Fine. Bookplate to front free endpaper. Former owner's signature, dated 1928, to ffep. No signs of foxing. ** "The Golden Ass" or, "Metamorphoses", as it was named by the author, Apuleius (c124 - c170), and is the only surviving complete novel in Latin from ancient Rome. It has been called, by some, the original picaresque novel, telling of the travels of Lucius, a man looking for adventure and magic. When he and his lover, Photis, see a witch transform herself into a bird, Lucius begs Photis to do the same for him. Unfortunately, Lucius is instead transformed into an ass, subsequently stolen, and sold several times.** Part of the "Black and Gold Library" from Boston publishers, Boni and Liveright, who, in addition to popularizing a catalogue of "classics," also first published some of the most important authors of the modernist era, before going bankrupt in 1929.
