Hardcover. 4 folio volumes (15" x 11") & four quarto volumes (8.5" x 11"). 8 total volumes (a complete run). Laid-in the first volume is a small black textured paper slip decorated in gilt with an Austin Spare image which states "From the Clive Harper AOS Collection" (also in gilt.) Each issue is described below. There are a few condition issues to some of the volumes (described below) but overall this set is in very good condition. Complete sets of the signed, deluxe issues are truly rare! While in his thirties Austin Osman Spare worked closely with other artists and authors. Chapman and Hall, a mainstream publisher, on the look out for other artists who might prove as phenomenally successful as Beardsley, supported these endeavours. Between 1922 and 1924 the literary and artistic journal the Golden Hind, edited by Spare and Clifford Bax was the creative cauldron of these collaborations. It was a remarkable creative milieu, the results of which some found shocking. Besides Spare and Bax, contributors included: Aldous Huxley, John Austin, Frank Brangwyn, Harry Clarke, Havelock Ellis, W.H. Davies, Laurence Housman, F.S. Flint, Haydn Mackey, Grace Rogers, Walter Spradbury, Alan Odle, Rabindranath Tagore, Evelyn Waugh, and many others. Vol. 1 No. 1 (October 1922): folio (15ins x 11ins). Preliminary adverts + 47pp No. 8 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. Has seven drawings plus a striking two page lithograph by Spare. Includes a large format single sheet pre-publication flier with extra lithograph by Spare in red, and with a discreet label of Walden bookshop, Chicago. Also with an extra loose lithograph by Lawrence Bradshaw signed by him. Wear to edges of boards, resulting in some loss. Very good. Vol 1 No. 2 (January 1923): folio (15 x 11). Preliminary adverts + 40pp No. 8 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. With a drawing and lithograph by Spare. With an additional laid-in lithograph by Haydn Mackay, signed by him. Very good. Vol. 1 No. 3 (April 1923): folio (15 x 11). Preliminary adverts + 40pp No. 8 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. With full-page print of a pen drawing and a 2 page lithograph by Spare. With an additional loose lithograph printed in red by Cecil French, signed by him. Wear to front board. Very good. Vol 1 No. 4 (July 1923): folio (15 x 11). Preliminary adverts + 40pp  No. 8 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. With reproductions of two bookplates by Spare, an image of Pan and another of a ram headed entity with a flaming wing. Laid-in is a prospectus for Vol. II, a single sheet folded once to indicate the new dimensions (11 ins x 8.5ins). The prospectus mentions that some have been shocked by Spare's work. Also laid-in is a large format single sheet flier for La Grande Ducasse Drolatique by Haydn Mackey. Loosely enclosed is a large lithograph by Spare's friend Grace Rogers, signed by her. Very good. Vol 2 No. 5 (October 1923): Quarto (8.5 x 11). 48pp. No. 69 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. This issue features a two page pen drawing by Spare, the Blasé Bacchante as well as a reproduction of his bookplate design for G.H. Mackey which is a self portrait with hair streaming into energy lines. Slight wear to edges of boards. Very Good. Vol 2 No. 6 (January 1924): Quarto (8.5 x 11). 48pp. No. 60 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. This edition has two bookplates designed by Spare reproduced, plus a lithograph & woodcut by Grace Rogers that appear to be profoundly influenced by Spare. Some wear to corners. Very Good. Vol 2 No. 7 (April 1924): Quarto (8.5 x 11). 48pp. No. 59 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. Some wear to edges. Very good. Vol 2 No. 8 (July 1924): Quarto (8.5 x 11). 48pp. No. 14 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BAX AND SPARE. Some wear to board edges, binding a little loose. A good to very good copy.

Description:
Chapman & Hall, 1922. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Volume 1, no.1-4, of the literary magazine edited by Clifford Bax and Austin Osman Spare, bound the publisher's boards. While the boards show a century of wear, they have protected the interior wonderfully, including the original front wrappers of each number and the many lithographs. Bound with no. 4 is the prospectus for Volume 2, announcing the change to a smaller size ('Originally we chose the large page because we wished to give our droughtsmen the best possible conditions. We abandon it now because few people have shelves that are high enough to accommodate folios, and because (according to a well-known authority in the book trade) most people, if a magazine contains large pictures, disregard its literary contents') and offering a defense of the artists and the use of nudes ('It is always the nude that finds people out. Artists often forget that only one person in a thousand can look upon a nude-study as a work of skill and that all the… Read More
