About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers,, 1872. First US, and first illustrated, edition in book form of "Trollope's best shorter book [and] one of the most charming idylls in English literature" (Walpole in Gerould), preceded only by the non-illustrated UK edition of May 1872. It was first published serially in Good Words from January to August 1872 and in Harper's New Monthly Magazine from February to September of the same year, both with Fraser's illustrations. A remarkably fresh copy. Tall octavo. Original green pebble-grain cloth, titles in gilt to spine and front board, publisher's device in blind to rear board, brown coated endpapers. Housed in a custom orange morocco-backed green cloth solander box with titles in gilt to black leather spine labels. 24 wood-engraved illustrations by Dalziel after F. A. Fraser, of which 8 full-page plates (including the fronstispiece), 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements at front, and a further 4 pp. at end. A hint of wear to corners, else a fine, bright copy. Winifred Gregory Gerould, Guide to Trollope, 1948, p. 96; Sadleir, Trollope 38.

Synopsis

Up among the Vosges mountains in Lorraine, but just outside the old half-de province of Alsace, about thirty miles distant from the new and thoroughly fr baths of Plombieres, there lies the village of Granpere. Whatever may be said or thought here in England of the late imperial rule in France, it must at any rate be admitted that good roads were made under the Empire. Alsace, which twenty years ago seems to have been somewhat behindhand in this respect, received her full share of Napoleon's attention, and Granpere is now placed on an excellent road which runs from the town of Remiremont on one line of railway, to Colmar on another.
