About This Item
Chicago: The Newberry Library, 1977. Color printed facsimile on heavy stock 12" X 19" cream stock. Near fine. Handsome high-quality facsimile of one gore housed at the Herman Dunlap Smith cartographic collection, being a portion of a 42" globe Coronelli produced in 1688. It depicts a central portion of North America and the Great Lakes, including the Mississippi River that la Salle explored just a few years previous (1682) -- with the mouth of the Mississippi placed much too far to the west. Accompanied by printed Newberry Library transmittal letter. Original Coronelli gores are virtually unobtainable and even this nice facsimile seldom seen.
