About This Item

New York: Avon Book Division - The Hearst Corporation. Assumed First Edition . Mass Market. Fine. Thomason, John W. Jr. - Illustrations. 160 Pages. Original Thomason copyright was in 1937. This Avon # T-507 publication was probably released in the 1960s. Green page edges. More than 50 very good hand drawn illustrations by the author are scattered throughout. Very slight spine-cock and barely noticeably spine area edge wear. This is an exceptional book in exceptionally good condition with text pages that are tight and white and more than just a western. Battle-weary, soul-scarred-men whose blood had darkened Antietam Creek, whose brothers had died in the agonies of Shiloh and Cemetery Ridge, whose youth and dreams had charred in the inferno of war-they turned westward to this raw and untamed land. From Appomattox, with the bitter taste of tainted victory or the burning gall of defeat, came the men and women who were to forge a lusty new era in the ashes of the old. Edward Cantrell, Yankee officer, was such a man. Brandon Hawkes, lovely rebel hellcat, was such a woman. This is the story of their tempestuous love, born out of violence and hate. Christian Science Monitor wrote "The manner of the telling is fresh and joyous and the book has caught perfectly the feel of the great sprawling mesquite-covered, sun-drenched country that is South Texas." Time Magazine wrote "Those who liked Gone With the Wind should like this story as well." Contents in Six Chapters: Gone to Texas, Texas Journey, Shooting Scrape at Tiburon Ranch, No Luck in Texas, Story of Vashti Silver, and The River Road.
