First Printing Stated; First Issue Dj With $3.75 Price, And The Following Additional Points Identifying This As The Scarce First Issue Jacket: Alignment Error Of Black Printing, Which Is Too Close To Edges Of Jacket, I. E. Bottom Of Price On Front Flap Is Spaced 19/32" Above The Top Of The "I" In "Is" In The First Line Of Text, Top Of Price Meets The Top Edge Of Front Flap; On The Spine The Publisher's Name "Hmco" Is Spaced 1 1/16" Below The Last Letter Of The Author's Name, And Thus Placed Along The Very Bottom Edge Of The Jacket Spine; On The Front Panel, The White Outline Of The Left Side Of The Window Passes Through The Left Of The "D" In "Goodbye" And The "B" In Columbus. [In The Second Printing The Dj Is Identical Except That The Price Is Spaced 7/16" Above The "I" And Is Well Spaced, Not Cut Off, At Top Of Front Flap; And The Publisher's Name Is Only 11/16" Below The Last Letter Of The Author's Name, Well Above The Bottom Of The Spine; On The Front Panel, The White And Red Illustration Is Further To The Left Of The Black Lettering, And The Black Lettering As All Slightly Higher, Such That The Left Outline Of The Window Passes Through The "D" In "Goodbye" And "B" In Columbus Near Their Right Edge, Etc. Both States Have The Same Text, A Photo Of Roth On Rear Panel, No Mention Of Prizes.] All Copies Of The First Printing Were Apparently Issued With The First Issue Jacket, And All Later Printings With The Corrected Jacket. Book Has Wear At Top And Bottom Of Spine, Including A Tiny Fray/ Pull Tear At Top Of Spine. Dj Not Price-Clipped, Browning To Spine And All Edges, Some Irregular Browning To Rear Panel, 1/8" Loss Across Entire Top Of Spine And A Strip 1/2" Long By 1/8" Deep At Bottom Of Spine, Affecting Half Of The Publisher's Name At Bottom Of Spine, Wear Along Rear Spine Fold And Both Flap Folds, With Wear And Slight Loss At Tips And Corners.

Goodbye, Columbus (1959) is the title of the first book published by the American novelist Philip Roth, a collection of six stories. In addition to its title novella, set in New Jersey, Goodbye, Columbus contains the five short stories "The Conversion of the Jews," "Defender of the Faith," "Epstein," "You Can't Tell a Man by the Song He Sings," and "Eli, the Fanatic.
