Philadelphia: Lee & Walker, 1862. First Edition. Sheet Music. Very Good. 6 pages including the cover. Portrait illustration of Sprague on the front cover. Once bound so slightly trimmed with a rough left edge. Light wear and soiling. Small owner's stamp in upper right corner of the cover.

William Sprague was the Governor of Rhode Island when the Civil War began, and although not a Republican, he pledged President Lincoln military support from his state. Following the shelling of Ft. Sumter, Rhode Island raised two regiments of infantry under the command of Colonel Ambrose Burnside. Sprague firmly believed that the war would be over in a matter of days once combat began, so he accompanied the state's regiments to the Battle of Bull Run where he served as an aide to Burnside and had his horse shot out from under himself while doing so.

After the union defeat, Sprague realized that the war would continue for some time, so he returned to the Governor's Office. Sprague remained loyal to Lincoln and attended the Loyal War Governor's Conference at Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1862 which, despite some contentious issues, reaffirmed support for Lincoln's management of the war and provided support for Lincoln to issue a preliminary emancipation proclamation decreeing that he would order the emancipation of all slaves in any state that did not cease its rebellion against the United States before 1 January 1863. Shortly after the conference, Sprague resigned his position to run for the Senate in which he would serve for the next twelve years.

At the time of listing, this version of the music is not listed in OCLC.

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1864. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Cover a tad soiled and age toned, else clean and attractive. Text of Naglee's September 27, 1864 letter to William D. Kelley. Pages 5-8 consist of "Second Chapter from the Secret History of the War," Naglee's October 6, 1864 letter to Kelley. Not in Monaghan, but just as cryptic bibliographically and clearly a variant of some sort. (Interestingly, Monaghan mentions "A Chapter from the Secret History of the War" and "First Chapter from the Secret History of the War" as variant titles -- but never any "Second Chapter.") Unusual. DORNBUSCH 51720 note (where a publication year of 1862 is mistakenly hazarded).

Unlisted Publisher, 1861. Map. Very Good. Map size - 7.75"x9". Leaf size - 9"x10.5". Clean with some folds; probably from a book. Very short closed tear at right margin; small piece of tape on reverse. Uncommon Civil War map showing the Battle of Port Royal. Publisher unknown, but probably contemporary. The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

Fourteen volumes in original hardcovers. Series 1: volumes 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26. 1896-1914. Generally condition runs from Good to Very Good plus. These are heavy volumes that are prone to binding failures when handled improperly. Some of these volumes are sound, some strengthened with new endpapers, some where binding is starting. None have failed bindings. The earlier volumes show more general wear to the boards than later volumes. I have prepared a more complete condition report on each volume so feel free to inquire. Shipping will be actual cost to me not more (weight of this is about 44 pounds). Please see images of the books you will receive. Notes: a quite interesting set with maps, charts and images of warships in every volume. An incredible feat of research that took 33 years to complete. (Civil War)

N.p.: N.p., 1856. Paperback. Small 4to. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Slight overall age toning, mainly to outer wrappers; occasional light foxing. Interesting compilation of extracts from Congressional speeches "by Southern members, in which is avowed the purpose... of dissolving the Union and overturning the existing Federal Government." Slavery and the fugitive slave law crop up often, and the troubled author concludes: "The shadows, sir, of the COMING STORM already darken our pathway. It will soon be upon us WITH ALL ITS FURY." Description:
Philadelphia: King & Baird, 1866. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 14pp. Very good. Bit of soiling to outer wrappers, else tight and nice. Collis, a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada (1832-71) to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behav[ing] himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy, by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg, but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but resigned before he could be tried. Whether the publication of Collis's pamphlet affected Cavada's Consul appointment we have not been able to determine. Most unusual. First edition. DORNBUSCH I, P 275A. SABIN 14457.
