About This Item
Baltimore: Maclay and Associates, 1977. Paperback. Fine. Paperback. Fine in brown side stapled paper wrappers with black title and illustration to front white paste down on front wrapper. This is number 60 of a limited edition of 100 copies and a facsimile reprint of the 1878 first edition. "The Grasshopper" was first published by Otto Sutro in 1878. This edition was printed from the original letterpress plates, purchased at an auction sale which included Sutro's effects. It is a charmingly illustrated cantata printed with lyrics and musical score - filled with anthropomorphic insects.
Adalbert Johann Volck (1828 - 1912) was a Baltimore dentist whose greater fame lay in his avocation as a sculptor, painter, and caracaturist. Best known among his works are his "Civil War Sketches," a series of pro-Confederate political cartoons which he published under the name V. Blada. He was the founder of the Charcoal Club, and a principal of the Wednesday Club, the amateur theatrical group to whom the present work is dedicated. 12 pages. Baltimore BALT/121514.
